Translational Research

Translational research in oncology is the interface between clinical and experimental science.  Its task is the direct implementation of scientific knowledge from basic research into clinic application as well as the transfer of clinical issues back to the laboratory. Translational research projects are aimed at increasing scientific knowledge for the understanding of the origin and development of disease. The identification and validation of biological markers is to improve the prognosis of tumor patients. We therefore desire to make a tailor-made therapy available to patients and to contribute to the development of new, purposive cancer medication as well as diagnostic tests.

As part of the GBG trials accompanying translational research projects are established and expanded. Once the patient has consented to the participation in translational research projects, different biomaterials such as tumor tissue and/or blood are centrally collected or directly investigated in scientific analyses. Standardised storage and administration of the samples are guaranteed by GBG´s central biomaterial banks. The examination of the biomaterials within the framework of our scientific projects takes place together with our specialised national and international cooperation partners.
